The residents of the Town of Sterling chose to vote to own and operate their own electric utility during the year of 1911. For nearly a century, the Sterling Municipal Light Department (SMLD) has been committed to providing customers with quality service and reliable, constant power at competitive rates.
      The SMLD is directed by a three-member board of directors. Each light board member is elected locally for a three-year term. Presently Richard A. Sheppard is the Chairman, Arthur J. Coughlin, Sr. is the Clerk and Kenneth I. H. Williams is the third member. 
    The SMLD is a public power utility located 10 miles NNE of Worcester, Massachusetts in the Town of Sterling. The building we are located in was originally the Sterling High School. Presently being in our ninety-second year of business, we have more than 3,300 residential, commercial, municipal and industrial customers, which are fed power through more than 150 miles of distribution lines. We are a member of ISO New England and a wholesale aggregator of power with power purchases from generation throughout New England and New York.
