Who is responsible for the equipment on a typical residential home?

The 2008 December Ice Storm helped the SMLD to clearly see the need to define who was responsible for the equipment on a typical residential home.

The SMLD will repair overhead electrical lines that run from the utility pole to your residence (including the house drop, point of attachment and the service connectors).  We will also maintain the electrical meter, whether it is attached to the building on the outside or inside.

The customer must maintain and make repairs (if necessary) to the following equipment:

  • Weather head and wires leading to the service connection.

  • Riser conduit or conductors.

  • Meter socket.

  • Circuit breaker panel.

Please note that all customer-owned service equipment must be inspected by the town wire inspector before the SMLD will energize the meter.  Thank you.
