How do you know you won't dig into something?
"Digging into the ground can be dangerous!"
You can easily
cut through underground power wires, telephone or cable television cables,
natural gas lines, or water and sewer pipes. To prevent this from
happening, Federal and State Laws require excavators to notify the local utility
companies before they start digging.
To make this easier, in New England
you can call an organization called "DIG SAFE" that in turn
notifies all of the utility companies concerned. If these companies have
underground lines in the area, they will come by and mark them with stakes.

Dig Safe is a system, funded by member companies,
which allows excavators to notify the appropriate utilities with one
telephone call for notification before digging, trenching, blasting,
demolishing, boring, backfilling, grading, landscaping, or any earth moving operations.
This system was created to promote public safety, avoid costly
damage to underground facilities and reduce cost and time notifications. Their
